The longest leg of your trip is on the Southwest Chief, and it does have a sleeper car. You have to reserve a sleeper room and pay extra.

If you have a regular ticket, you are travelling by coach. Sleeper cars with rooms are an additional charge. If you have a sleeper room, you get all meals free (but you need to tip the waiters), water, coffee, juice, and a newspaper free. You have a shower available. There are outlets for your electronics. If you can afford it, a roomette makes the trip so much better.
Coach is a long trip to do cross country. Take your own pillow and blanket. Take some toiletries (washcloth, soap, deodorant, small towel, toothbrush and paste) in a bag you can easily get to. Wash up every morning. Take food -- Amtrak food is expensive. You won't have a microwave or fridge. Cereal, fruit, soft drinks, peanut butter and jelly, crackers, cheese, trail mix -- good stuff. You don't want to feel fat and greasy for days on the train.
You'll change trains in Chicago. Chicago has a good food court at the station, so eat there and watch your belongings like a hawk.
You will be travelling on the fabled CA Zephyr (NOT the Southwest Chief, which leaves from LA). Fantastic scenery through the Rockies. You won't have cell service for the mountain parts of the trip. From Chicago to Buffalo, you will be in darkness.
