The Committee For A New Order
Superman Sunday Newspaper Strips (June 22 - October 19)Superman confronts another one of those pesky fifth column organizations which are popping up stateside in the early days of the war in Europe. In this case, it’s a media-savvy “Committee for A New Order” which takes to the airwaves to deliver anti-democracy rhetoric and threaten a few major institutions with explosive destruction.
In a twist, the Committee’s chairman , Kopak, is running the whole endeavor as a scam, his ultimate intent to abscond with the saboteurs funds, leaving them broke and in the clutches of the cops. Surely that makes Kopak a hero, doesn’t it, fleecing and framing Bundist sympathizers? Well, no, because he also takes turns trying to torture, drown and kidnap Lois Lane, not to mention forcing her under pain of death to recant America live and on air.
Lois is actually responsible for most of the forward motion in this arc, despite the fact that it’s Superman who spends the story zipping around and performing fantastic feats. As with many early Superman stories, if it weren’t for Lois’ fearless curiosity, the bad guy would probably get away from the Man of Steel and the forces of justice …
